Disciplinary literacy in science relies not only on disciplinary knowledge (i.e., concepts), but also on awareness of disciplinary traditions that lead to that knowledge (i.e., practices). Text plays an integral part of the knowledge and theory building in science (Kamil & Barnhardt, 2004), especially in subdomains such as astronomy. Because of the vast space and time scales on which phenomena in space occur, it is often difficult to observe and manipulate these occurrences directly.Investigating star cycles, planetary distance, and lunar motion requires abstraction and interpretation of the natural world, a process that textual tools can support.
The argument for developing disciplinary literacy in space science does not require accomplished science teachers to abandon what they already know to be best practices in space science teaching.On the contrary, the use of models, simulations, visual representations and other firsthand experiences greatly enhance students' abilities with tackling complex text and meeting the performance tasks expected by the Next Generation Science Standards and the Common Core Standards in English Language Arts and Literacy in History, Social Studies, Science and Technical Subjects.
